BUSINESS OFFICE FILES

Recover access to business Office files

Start with the exact protection that blocks your Word document, Excel workbook or PowerPoint presentation. Keep the original unchanged and confirm permission to process it before choosing a recovery path.

    Quick answer

A file password is different from a work account

If Office asks for a password before showing the contents, first check the author, approved password records and backups. If the contents are visible but editing is blocked, diagnose the restriction or organisational permissions. Submit a supported encrypted file only when those routes do not resolve access.

    Prepare an Office recovery request

The file will not open without a password

A password requested before the document, workbook or slides appear can protect the file contents. Recovering a Microsoft account or changing a SharePoint permission does not reset this file password. Preserve the original DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX/XLSM or PPT/PPTX file and record the exact prompt.

The file opens, but editing is blocked

Read-only mode, worksheet protection, a modify password, a sharing lock and an organisation's access controls are different cases. Ask the document owner or IT administrator which protection was applied. If access is controlled by an organisational account, use that organisation's supported access process.

Check existing recovery routes before submitting

Ask the author for the password or an authorised unprotected copy. Check the organisation's approved password store, backups and version history. For Word, Microsoft describes an administrative DocRecrypt route, but it can help only when it was configured before the file was encrypted; it is not a universal reset for existing files.

Prepare one authorised file and relevant clues

Record the file type, approximate Office version, whether the prompt appears before opening or only before editing, and any remembered password pattern. A likely year, word, separator or length range is useful context. Share clues for this file, rather than unrelated account passwords or a password-manager export.

If your policy does not permit submitting the source file, review the supported hash-only route first. Hash-only processing can search for a password; it does not provide an unlocked source document. Availability depends on the submitted format.
