    Recovery is a search problem shaped by encryption, password patterns and the clues you remember. This guide explains how to assess an authorised ZIP, RAR, PDF or Office file before you choose a recovery path.

    Identify the protection

    A password prompt before a file opens is different from an edit, print or worksheet restriction. The distinction affects what recovery work is appropriate.

    Start with the smallest useful search

    Common passwords, short PINs and relevant patterns are checked first. This avoids presenting a large paid attempt as the only path.

    A responsible workflow reports the result state clearly and does not describe every file as recoverable before the format and candidate space are assessed.

    What determines recovery difficulty?

    Format and encryption: legacy formats can behave very differently from current AES-protected documents. A filename extension alone is not enough to estimate the work.

    Password structure: a remembered phrase, year, language, keyboard pattern or length range can be more useful than a generic "try everything" request.

    Verification: the target is a result that can be checked against the file, not a vague likelihood score. If no result is found, that must remain a clear outcome rather than a false success.

    Can every password-protected file be recovered?

    No. Recovery depends on the file format, encryption, password length and useful context. A modern random password can be impractical to recover, so a responsible service should not promise universal recovery.

    Why do password hints matter?

    A remembered word, date, language, keyboard pattern or rough password length can narrow the candidate space. Hints are useful only when they relate to the original password; they do not guarantee a result.

    What is the difference between a Fast Check and a deeper recovery attempt?

    A Fast Check looks for common and simple candidates first. A deeper attempt uses a broader, targeted candidate set informed by the file type and permitted hints. The exact path depends on the file and result state.

    When is password recovery appropriate?

    Only for files you own or are expressly authorised to access. Do not upload files belonging to another person or organisation without permission.
