Remove an Excel opening password you know

Use this path in desktop Excel for Windows when the file opens with a password you already have.

Open the workbook with its existing password. Save a separate copy if the original must remain protected.
Go to File → Info → Protect Workbook → Encrypt with Password. Clear the password field and confirm.
Save the workbook, close it and reopen the saved copy to check that the opening-password prompt is gone.

Mac menu names differ by Excel version. Removing file encryption does not automatically remove separate worksheet, structure or editing restrictions.

First confirm that you can already open and view the workbook. Work only with a file you own or have permission to modify.

For locked cells, select the worksheet and use Review → Unprotect Sheet. Enter the sheet password when requested.
For locked sheet tabs or structure, use the Review tab's Protect Workbook control and supply the structure password when requested.
Save the authorised copy and check the affected cells or sheet actions. If the password is unknown, ask the owner for it or an unprotected copy before trying another method.

A password to modify may also allow a read-only opening. Organisational permissions or rights-management restrictions need permission from the owner; recovering an opening password does not grant that access.

A workbook that cannot display its contents needs a different approach from a sheet that cannot be edited.

Search your password manager, the sender's message and accessible older versions. An older version may still be encrypted with the same password, so check before buying recovery.
Enter your email and upload an authorised copy for automatic assessment. XLS and XLSX are evaluated by their actual protection profile, not just the extension.
Supply remembered clues and review the result options or separately quoted continuation. An eligible unlocked workbook can cost less than receiving the original password.
