The right way to unlock a Word document depends on what is blocked. A password before the document opens protects its contents. A document that opens but cannot be edited has a different restriction. Identify the problem first, then use the matching steps below.
If yes, you need the opening password, an accessible backup or a supported recovery result. If the text is visible but editing is blocked, check Review → Restrict Editing instead. Removing an editing restriction does not decrypt a document protected by an opening password.
Recovery process
A password prompt before the content appears indicates opening protection. A Restrict Editing pane, read-only mode or Protected View message after opening points to a different access or editing issue.
With a known opening password, open the document and clear it from Encrypt with Password. With a known editing password, use Stop Protection. If you forgot the opening password, check the sender, saved passwords and an accessible earlier copy first.

The contents cannot be read until the opening protection is resolved.
The text is visible, but Word limits changes. First identify who controls the restriction.

The built-in removal command requires a document you can already open. It is not a reset method for a forgotten opening password.

A Protected View banner, a file currently locked by another user or rights-management restrictions are different problems. A password-recovery purchase does not grant organisational permission.
When the contents will not open and no usable backup exists, the next step is a file-specific assessment.
Where offered, an unlocked document may cost less than the original password. Receiving an unlocked copy does not prove that the original password was recovered. Hash-only input can return a supported verified password, but cannot produce an unlocked file without the source document.
